The PR card is the document permanent residents usually present when returning to Canada on a commercial carrier. Status itself does not expire when the card expires.
What to prepare
Make sure IRCC has your correct Canadian mailing address. Apply to renew before travelling if your card will expire, and track the residency obligation.
Important to know
If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you may need a permanent resident travel document to return.
